Mocha vs latte: what's the difference?

A mocha is a latte with chocolate: espresso, chocolate sauce and steamed milk, often finished with whipped cream or cocoa. A latte has no chocolate, so the coffee and milk are all you taste.

The differences

A mocha

Mocha

A latte with a pump of chocolate sauce added before the milk goes in. Part coffee, part hot chocolate.

How the café in Cuppology builds it

  1. Start with a hot cup.
  2. Pour in the chocolate syrup: 10 ml.
  3. Pour in the espresso: 30 ml.
  4. Pour in the silky microfoam: 200 ml.

What the café accepts as a mocha

  • Shot: ristretto or espresso or lungo
  • Coffee 18–90 ml
  • Milk 170–320 ml
  • Foam under 16 mm
  • Milk 40–75 °C

A latte

Latte

The milkiest of the three: lots of steamed milk and about a centimetre of foam, often served in a glass.

Which should you order?

Pick a mocha when you want a treat halfway to hot chocolate. Pick a latte for an everyday milky coffee.
